Our Journey

Tim recognised a further opportunity to maximise cost-saving potential for clients by introducing high tolerances at an earlier stage in the process. Combined with his growing reputation for attention to detail and drive for efficiency, this led to business growth and the purchase of a GPS-automated excavator. The new machine provided precision from the very first bucket in the ground, reducing over-digging, unnecessary backfilling, and the waste of purchased materials.

As a result of being involved from the very outset of projects, T J Atkin Ltd. naturally evolved into the role of Principal Contractor.

What began as a convenient solution for clients soon became an obvious benefit: by assuming the Principal Contractor role, T J Atkin Ltd. could apply its high-tolerance, low-waste ethos from the very outset of a project. This approach maximises efficiency and ensures every penny of clients’ budgets is spent wisely. It is this mindset that T J Atkin Ltd. has become known for, fostering long-term loyalty among clients nationwide.

About Tim Atkin

Tim grew up in the Yorkshire village of Melbourne, where his interest in engineering began at a young age.

Surrounded by rural life, he developed a strong connection to the countryside and a deep appreciation for how things are built and how they work. His passion for machinery and engineering was fuelled by hands-on experience, from an early age he was confidently driving tractors and operating a range of agricultural equipment. This early exposure honed his practical skills, laying a solid foundation for his future career in construction. Tim’s ongoing enthusiasm for farming and the outdoors continues to influence his practical, grounded approach to work today.

Tim studied Construction at college before beginning his career in Architecture and Engineering.

During his time as an Architectural Technologist, he gained valuable experience in building design and developed a strong proficiency in AutoCAD and surveying. This role also provided him with practical experience of the architectural design process, technical drawing and project management.

In 2009, Tim took a new direction as Senior Project Manager for a four-year major expansion project at Ryedale Organics, one of the country's leading independent recycling facilities.  During this project, he recognised the significant cost savings that could be achieved by refining workmanship tolerances to match design specifications and drawings. He also built strong relationships with specialist subcontractors and suppliers across the construction industry.  Tim's hands-on experience, combined with his extensive understanding of building design and efficient construction practices, inspired him to establish T J Atkin Ltd. in 2013.

Since 2013, Tim has continued to grow and develop the business, expanding T J Atkin Ltd.’s capabilities.

Tim remains committed to delivering high-quality, innovative, and client-focused projects and services.
